Hux's Grand Prix Legends Section

Team Lotus ensign.

""Anyone who says they like the ´ring is either lying or didn't drive fast enough" - Jackie Stewart.

This is my brief section on the game I have been playing since December 1998 - Grand Prix Legends. It's the most challenging and realistic racing sim on the market with the added bonus of being able to be played over the internet against real drivers. This is possible because of something called VROC.

VROC - or Virtual Racers Online Connection - is a collection of serveral 'servers' you can join races on as a 'client'. The easiest way to play is by using GPL Spyboy. GPL Spyboy shows a list of all the races currently running on VROC and tells you what your latency (lag) is to each of them. It's no picnic out there let me tell you! These drivers are fast and the racing is expected to clean so you better behave yourself. Most of the races carry one of the advanced damage settings too so your conduct impacts on others tremendously.

A Lotus in GPL... earlier :-)

For the best experience on VROC you need to have a ping time of 500ms or less but I have had a few stable races with pings slightly higher than this. Packet loss is probably more vital to a good race than latency. Press ALT-L in the game to see your connection details to the host. You will get disconnected a few times on VROC but it's just one of those things you have to put up with. It's very frustrating when you happen to be leading a full field of drivers only to get bumped on the final lap with a nice lead!

My Huxford Lotus car

  • Download Alison Hine's core.ini file for GPL1.1. It's sort of like the standard on VROC and gives you a better chance of remaining in synch with the host.

  • Download Cristian Eichler's gpl_ai.ini for computer cars that are more human. Read : Error prone!

  • Download a Glide wrapper for players with 3dfx Voodoo2 cards. I have adjusted the mirror refresh on mine to update the mirrors every third frame. You hardly notice the change behind you after a while but you will have 36fps in the game now if you didn't before.

  • Download the above crash at Kyalami. Even if you don't usually download crashes, please download this one. I'm not kidding - you'll get a kick out of the realism. Best I've ever seen! (390kb)

  • Download my cream driving suit and pigskin gloves.... if you feel that's really necessary:-p

  • Click here to see my best laps GPL Export. I'm only any good at some of the tracks though so..

  • Click here to see my best VROC performance so far. This 2nd in an unofficial race at Watkins Glen was better than my full field wins at Spa and Monza: )

  • German, Cristian Eichler's race is cut short at Kyalami... along with his torso ;-)
